The Bible Answer
What is Wisdom?
Mount Rose is a place where a river of living water is flowing. God’s Word is being taught well in our Sunday school, Wednesday night Bible study and Vacation Bible School. Those who come to drink are well refreshed.
Our pastor’s wife, however stated on more then one occasion her disappointment in the lack of interest (of those who need knowledge) in the learning opportunities made available to them. The Bible speaks to us concerning this. “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children,” Hosea 4:6 KJV and Ephesians 5:14-17, “Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.”
In one of our Vacation Bible School classes this summer, our teacher asked, “What Is Wisdom?” Thanks teacher.
Wisdom is the ability to make knowledgeable experienced, insightful, judgments. Decisions that do not conflict with the word of God are wise. We are not born with this ability; it comes through learning and being taught. It comes through instruction and experience. The Bible says in Proverbs 22:15, “foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.” In other words, the inability to make wise decisions is all the human child has to work with when starting out in life. Instruction, correction, and judicially administered pain will make him a wise, thoughtful, deliberate, decision maker. These disciplinary actions will strip foolish tendencies from his mind. Many of us have difficulty being wise because the process that produces wisdom was at some point subverted. Yet James 1:5 says to those who would be wise, ask the Father and He has a program designed to bring you to a greater level of wisdom.
The Bible clearly demonstrates God’s process or program of teaching wisdom in Hebrews 12:5b-8, “My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.”
I Corinthians 2: 6 & 7 speaks to the inferiority of man’s earthly wisdom and man’s inability to understand God’s wisdom without being taught: “Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Earthly wisdom will lead to a destructive end unlike God’s wisdom. God’s wisdom begins with instruction, knowledge, and understanding of who He is. The result is reverence and honor for God which leads His children into good, productive, living in this life and the life to come.
Psalm 14:1 says, “The fool has said in his heart, there is no God.” Knox comments that, “There is no God” is the fond thought of reckless hearts.
But the wise bow to the great God of Glory and this is the beginning of good insightful decision making.
If you have a question look to God for the answer, “It’s in there”. And, if you can’t find it ask the Bible Answers is here to help you.
